The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE (“fan edition”) is a phone that feels out of time and place. Many expected the device to debut months and months ago. Now, in January 2022, it finally arrives bearing last year’s name, last year’s specs, and last year’s design, leaving it slightly out of step with Samsung’s lineup. Samsung hasn’t explicitly said why the phone didn’t show up in 2021, though it likely has something to do with the ongoing global chip shortage. We’ve already seen a little from LG Display pre-CES 2022. However, the company has now unveiled a bunch more concept products that make use of its cutting-edge OLED display technology.

In addition to its recent Media Chair and Virtual Ride concepts based on flexible OLED, LG Display’s latest concepts use transparent OLED to create new use cases. For example, the company envisions the technology used in shopping installations and store windows. Acer unveiled three new Chromebooks at CES 2022, refreshing its existing mid-range and premium portfolio with the latest chips from Intel and Mediatek. Notably, the most powerful model of the trio is powered by Mediatek’s Kompanio 1380 processor.

While we’ve seen several Chromebooks feature Mediatek processors so far, they’ve all traded performance for a lower price point — typically targeting the sub-$400 market. We have Android app lists for many, many topics. After all, people use their Android devices for a ton of different things. Many of these apps are pretty mainstream, while others are very niche. These niche apps work exceptionally well, but only for the few people who actually need them.

While most companies slowed amid the global chipset shortage and ongoing pandemic, Apple had a pretty good 2021. It continued to see growth in the smartphone sector while hitting the right spot with the new MacBook Pro. But what can we expect in 2022? According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in his newsletter, the company could bring sweeping revamps to its core products.

2020 saw the first major smartphone with an under-display selfie camera debut in the ZTE Axon 20 5G, with the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi following up in 2021. It looks like Google is also thinking about this feature thanks to a newly spotted patent.

Keeping up the CES tradition, Samsung has announced a refresh to its headlining trio of televisions. The MicroLED, Neo QLED, and Lifestyle series all offer their own set of selling points but don’t see much of a hardware refresh over their 2021 counterparts. However, Samsung has also announced changes to the panels’ software experience.

A refreshed software experience

Samsung is introducing a new Smart Hub to its 2022 displays, including smarter content discovery and curation features. There’s also a more acute focus on gaming too. The Gaming Hub effectively turns Samsung’s TVs into a cloud gaming platform, supporting Nvidia GeForce Now, Google Stadia, and Utomik. Samsung teased that more services could be added in the future.

The Xiaomi 12 series launched in China late last month as one of the first device families to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship processor. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any word on global availability at the time.

Now, frequent tipster Mukul Sharma has told MySmartPrice that the Xiaomi 12 series will launch outside China by the end of February or early March. The tipster also suggests that the Indian launch will either take place around the same time or “soon after” this window.

Xiaomi enjoyed a pretty good year in 2021, releasing its first non-China-exclusive premium flagship, offering some stellar budget phones in the Redmi Note 10 series, and launching its first foldable phone.
