The Best Earbuds

Wired earbuds may not win any popularity contests in today’s headphone market, but they’re still a great choice for the audio lover who wants the best sound quality for their dollar—and who dislikes the feel of over-ear headphones. We recommend the Final E4000 wired earbuds because they sound good, fit well, and are built to last.

The Best Smart Locks

Your front door lock is an unsung hero, quietly standing guard to keep thieves and rogues at bay. Smart locks are the superheroes of the species, with special powers that make life more convenient (and a little more fun). We love and recommend the Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro, a small, attractive smart deadbolt that be triggered multiple ways including a fingerprint reader or a keypad.

The Best Windows Ultrabook

Many ultrabooks are good—by definition, they’re powerful thin-and-light laptops with long battery life—but only a few stand out as great. After testing 16 new models in 2020 and testing hundreds of laptops in the past six years, we found that the Dell XPS 13 (9310) is the best Windows ultrabook for most people. Different versions of the XPS 13 have been our top pick since early 2015, and this model is the best one yet.

The Best Password Managers

Everyone should be using a password manager. It’s the most important thing you can do—alongside two-factor authentication—to keep your online data safe. We’ve evaluated dozens of paid and free password managers and tested four, and we think 1Password offers the best combination of features, compatibility, security, and ease of use. You don’t have to pay for a good password manager, but if you can, 1Password is worth the $36 per year.

Which iPhone Should I Get?

If you have an iPhone that you’re happy with, keep it. Don’t upgrade just because Apple has released new phones.

But if your current phone is running too slow or is damaged, or if you’re simply ready for an upgrade, you should choose between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE (2nd generation). Both are great phones that will last you for years. If you value longer battery life, a larger screen, or better camera performance, go with the iPhone 11. Otherwise, the iPhone SE delivers the same power and overall experience as the iPhone 11 for several hundred dollars less, and in a smaller size that some people will prefer.

The Best Outdoor Security Camera

An outdoor security camera is a powerful deterrent to mischief makers and a convenient way to determine whether that thing going bump in the night is a friend, foe, or furry creature. We recommend the Google Nest Cam Outdoor for the job. It’s fully weatherproof, and although you need a subscription to receive person alerts, to set Activity Zones, and to store recordings, the Nest Cam Outdoor sends motion-activated smartphone notifications and allows you to choose between event-based recording or capturing absolutely everything 24/7.

The Best Smartphones

There’s no one smartphone that is best for everyone, but we’ve spent hundreds of hours testing scores of phones so that you can find the best one for you. The phone you buy will depend on your budget, your wireless carrier, and which of the major smartphone platforms—Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android—you’re already invested in. But whether you want a top-of-the-line phone or something more affordable, we have recommendations for iPhone and Android, and all of our picks are available for all the major US carriers.

The Best Smartwatches, Fitness Trackers, and Running Watches

We’ve worn dozens of smartwatches and fitness trackers over the course of workdays, workouts, vacations, and the rest of everyday life to see which ones best track your activity, relay your phone notifications, give you access to apps, and do anything else that lets you keep your phone in your pocket. The Apple Watch Series 5 (which works only with iPhones) offers the best combination of style, message handling, apps, battery life, activity tracking, and value. But we also have picks if you use an Android phone, or if you value fitness or distance-sports tracking over style, notifications, and apps.

The Best Wi-Fi Mesh-Networking Kits

You may have spots in your home where the Wi-Fi sucks. And bad Wi-Fi is in many ways worse than no Wi-Fi at all.

Mesh-networking kits, instead of using a single router, use multiple access points spread around your house to improve the range and performance of your Wi-Fi, and they’re great for large homes or old apartments or houses with plaster, brick, or concrete walls. After spending over 100 hours testing 25 mesh Wi-Fi networking kits in home and lab environments, we’re confident the Eero Pro + 2 Eero Beacons set is the best mesh-router choice for most people who need one.

Most people, however, don’t need mesh Wi-Fi. Our testing showed that most people in smallish homes and apartments can do fine with just a router.

The Best TV for Video Games

If you’re a serious gamer, the last thing you want is a TV that holds you back because of its slow response times. After performing over 100 hours of testing on this year’s TVs, we’re confident that the best TV for video gaming is the Samsung RU8000. It has low input lag, it supports multiple gamer-friendly features, and it delivers good image quality for a reasonable price.

The Best Electric Stoves and Ranges

A good electric stove (or ranges, whatever you call them) should allow you to easily cook a full-sized meal and keep it warm, be it on the stove, or in the oven. Over the years, we’ve researched and reviewed different electric freestanding stoves in person and online. The GE JB735 stood out from the pack. It comes in five different finishes, and it has as complete of a set of cooking features as you’ll find in a range that costs less than $1,000.

The Best Rain Jackets and Raincoats

As Longfellow might have said: Into each life spent commuting, running errands, or watching a kid’s soccer game, some rain must fall. We spent two and a half months researching 134 raincoats and testing 30—with a panel of six testers in a range of shapes and sizes—to find seven of the best rain jackets in a wide variety of sizes, styles, colors, and lengths to keep you dry and comfortable.

iPad Pro vs. Surface Pro 7: The Best Pro Tablets

Trying to replace your laptop with a tablet isn’t always a great idea, since each device is good at different things. But pro tablets like the Apple 11-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 do the best job of fusing the portability of tablets with the multitasking capabilities and app support of laptops so that you can actually get your work done. The iPad is the better tablet, and it’s ideal for creative tasks. The Surface is better at laptop-oriented tasks such as writing or programming, but it’s a worse tablet.

The most important thing you can do to increase your online security, alongside using a password manager, is to enable two-factor authentication. After interviewing three experts and testing seven authenticator apps, we think Authy has the best combination of compatibility, usability, security, and reliability.

After 50 hours of research and testing, we’re confident that the 3M 8516 N95 Particulate Respirator is the best disposable respirator mask and the 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6501QL/49488 is the best reusable respirator when used with N95 or P100 filters.

After testing 35 pumps over the past three years, we believe the Lezyne Classic Floor Drive is the best floor pump for most bike commuters thanks to its sturdy construction, easy-to-read dial, and utterly reliable screw-on head (which fits both Presta and Schrader valves). We also have a pick for a portable pump to use while out on a ride.

You’re at Home. The News Is Intense. Make Time for Self-Care.

As the coronavirus continues taking over the collective consciousness, personal and public health are of top concern and priority. If you’ve been following the news, chances are, you’re doing all you can to contribute to that greater good: You’re washing your hands (perhaps more than you ever thought possible), disinfecting shared surfaces, and practicing social distancing.

The Best Respirator Mask for Smoke and Dust

Keeping a supply of reliable respirator masks on hand will leave you with one less thing to worry about in a wildfire or other disaster—and the masks can also be useful when you’re coping with mold or otherwise polluted air. After 50 hours of research and testing, we’re confident that the 3M 8516 N95 Particulate Respirator is the best disposable respirator mask and the 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6501QL/49488 is the best reusable respirator. When the air quality is dangerous, though, your first line of defense should be to minimize your time outside and to use an air purifier inside your home.

Psych Yourself Out of Credit Card Debt

Being in credit card debt can feel like doing laundry. Normally you toss a load into the washing machine when your hamper gets full. But sometimes—after, say, a particularly busy month—your entire wardrobe is piled on the floor, forcing you to avert your eyes whenever you walk by the clothing mountain to avoid pangs of self-loathing.
